This exclusive photo gallery is a special one for the WHA Hall of Fame. Our offices are located in Tucson, Arizona, and these photos are from the first major-league hockey game ever played in Tucson, from a 1975 pre-season WHA game.
The WHA Phoenix Roadrunners held their training camp that year 100 miles south of their home ice, in Tucson (at the then-recently completed Tucson Convention Center and its 7,000-seat arena), and they played two pre-season games there:
on October 6, 1975 vs the WHA San Diego Mariners, and October 8 vs the brand-new WHA Denver Spurs.
Various minor league teams have used the T.C.C. for hockey since these major-league games, and the venue in downtown Tucson is still in use today for college hockey, looking almost exactly like it did in these 1975 shots.
Special thanks to The Arizona Daily Star newspaper, which allowed the WHA Hall of Fame to search for the original photo negatives for these shots in their archives, and which kindly allowed us to share them here.
Obviously, do not duplicate or distribute these images without our express permission.
